First Cutting

On Friday we rolled, mowed and fertilized the greens for the first time this season.  We have wanted to roll and mow for about two months now but the weather just hasn't allowed it.  The fertilizer that we applied was an 18-9-18 with a 75% slow release technology.  The delivery rate was half pound of nitrogen, a quarter pound of phosphorus and a half pound of potassium per 1,000 square feet.  Last year we came in to this new venture with the goal of healing all of the injured turf on greens and then protecting that same turf throughout the season.  Mission accomplished!  Now that we have stronger turf and further developed root structures we plan to shift those goals to delivering faster, firmer and more consistent putting surfaces.  A reduction of fertility will be a crucial part of these plans.  However, if we don't get the kind of cooperation from the weather that we intend to see we will always be ready to roll with punches and scale back on the aggressiveness of our program.  Protecting our turf on greens is always #1!

Step 1: Clean any leaves sticks or any other debris off the greens

Step 2:  Roll the greens to smooth out any uneven turf from winter play or freezing and thawing

Step 3: Mow

 Step 4: Fertilize
